Hi Everyone

Just to let you know The Wedding actually took place yesterday. In spite of incredible pre-gig nerves, it all went exceptionally well! I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it and, more importantly, my audience seemed to enjoy it too! I have had some lovely feedback. The audience was a good mix. From (very) young children, right through to adults. I was lucky enough to have a couple of very enthusiastic seven year-olds in the front row and a small band of keen and supportive adults, just behind them.

In the end I opted mostly for card tricks, with one or two other little tricks. Since I started this discussion, back in April, I have tried a number of new (to me) ideas, but I felt more confident with the tried and trusted old favourites. The seven year-olds loved, and participated in, every card trick (one little girl even showed me ‘her’ card trick during the break!)

I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this discussion for their help and urge that, although my first gig has been and gone, that contributions continue as I’m sure I am not the only newcomer who has benefited from the great words of wisdom in this thread.

Thanks to Aus and Janos for giving me the confidence to stick to card magic for the youngsters. Particular thanks to Janos who, as well as posting great advice here in the Forum, has sent a number of encouraging private messages – what a really nice guy!

Thanks again guys, keep the ideas coming.

PS I have learned some new skills from your other suggestions and intend to introduce them slowly into future gigs (Yes, I will be doing it again!!!)

Hi Aus,

Although I’ve practiced the Great Ace Race, and I love it, I didn’t feel confident enough to perform it in front of a bunch of strangers. As I said above, by sticking to the tried and trusted, I was able to concentrate more on patter/performance/rapport. In the end I’m glad I did. From the feedback I got from guests and, more importantly, the Bride and Groom got from guests, people remember the show as funny and entertaining. Considering it is the first time I’ve performed in public, I’m delighted with that! Ace Race, and some of the other new things I have learned during this process, will be getting used soon enough. I have a Birthday Party to do in a fortnight, maybe I’ll try it there.
